What are your thoughts? Did you learn something new? Do you agree with this take?
Yep, was talking about this a year ago. Data will now be monetised locally in-country, where it can be taxed. Not syphoned out of one economic block to be processed and profitied from in another. Just like Oil, the EU has chosen to embargo its citizens’ data. To this end, both Google and AWS have announced ‘air-gapped’ platforms dedicated to hosting EU customer data. This is further underscored by the commitment from both organisations to incorporate EU entities to appease customers and the good folks at the EDPB. For me, the Chinese will lead the way in cutting off the West from the East as they extend their rails along the newly formed economic alliances they are building. If you want to do business with the West, choose AWS; if you’re going to do business with the East, choose Alibaba. Otherwise, the cost of legally processing data will be astronomical as an external entity.
