I recently had the pleasure of moderating a TechArena Great Debate webinar in which panelists from industry and academia discussed the rapid advancement of AI and its ethical implications. Hosted by the Cosmos Community, the discussion focused on the delicate balance between innovation and responsibility in AI implementation.
The panel featured Florence Chee, associate professor of digital communication at Loyola University Chicago & director of the Center for Digital Ethics and Policy and the Social & Interactive Media Lab; Peter Mattson, president of MLCommons & senior staff Engineer at Google; Matty Bakkeren, founder of Momenthesis and former Intel technologist; and Dave Graham, VAST Data product marketing manager & chair of responsible systems for the Responsible Computing Consortium. Each panelist brought unique perspectives on AI ethics, its societal impact, and business implications. In this post, I will share five key takeaways that emerged during the discussion, followed by a deeper dive into each panelist’s perspective.

Beware of Bias in AI Systems: AI has demonstrated that it will inadvertently reinforce existing biases. Continuous human oversight is essential to ensure ethical outcomes, especially in sensitive sectors like finance and healthcare.

Start Small and Educate: Businesses should begin with manageable AI projects, focusing on specific tasks rather than entire roles. Education across all organizational levels is crucial to understand AI’s potential and limitations. 3) Establish Clear Benchmarks: Standardized metrics, like the AILuminate benchmark, are vital for assessing AI safety and performance. Benchmarks help ensure that AI systems align with ethical standards and societal values.

Foster Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Ethical AI development requires input from diverse fields—from technologists and ethicists to policymakers and sociologists. This collaborative approach ensures a holistic view of AI’s impact.

Promote AI Literacy: As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, public understanding of its implications is critical. Empowering individuals with the knowledge to navigate AI technologies responsibly is key to ethical adoption.
The Ethical Landscape of AI: A Multi-Dimensional View
Florence emphasized the evolving nature of AI ethics. Having started as a game researcher, she highlighted the shift from traditional games to user-generated content and data mining, which opened Pandora’s box of privacy concerns.
“I looked at how games were changing from the boxes that we buy in the store to user generated content, insights about users, data mining and what we called Big Data and social network games like Farmville,” Florence said. “Gamers and their activities and identities were increasingly datafied, and that led me to explore ethical implications of sharing user data, objects as people, looking at consent, the children, elderly, surveillance issues, privacy and rights.”
Florence stressed that AI’s impact is universal—from the UN to the Vatican to local daycare centers—and underscored the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to navigate these complexities.
Measuring AI Safety: The Role of Benchmarks
Peter shed light on the necessity of standardized benchmarks to evaluate AI’s safety and performance. He discussed the AILuminate v.1.0 benchmark for general-purpose AI chat models, which assesses the safety of chat interactions.
“I think it’s interesting to make sure, as we have these conversations about AI, ethics, and responsibility, that we’re simultaneously considering both the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ because this is a very fast-moving industry,” Peter said. “…It’s important to decide how we want these systems to behave in alignment with our values, but it’s also important to talk about how we’re going to achieve that. Because…like with any industry, any advanced technology we’ve ever developed – planes, cars, medicines, there is a complimentary technology and how we test them for safety or responsibility or risk that needs to go along with that.”
Peter emphasized that AI’s rapid pace requires an equally agile approach to ethics and safety.
AI in Business: Balancing Innovation with Responsibility
Matty brought a pragmatic perspective on integrating AI in business. Matty highlighted the dual-edged nature of AI’s potential, especially for small-to-medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Companies who implement AI should have a clear purpose for why they are doing it, he said.
“When you implement an AI system, you really need to think about what you’re doing as a company,” he said. “You’ve built a brand; you’ve built an image; you have a reputation in market…There are so many examples out there of companies that have…rushed to implement AI and have been burned.”
Matty stressed the importance of starting small, understanding the tools, and continuously assessing their impact. He also underscored the role of education within organizations, ensuring not just developers, but the wider team understands AI’s implications. He warned
against over-reliance on AI, emphasizing that human judgment remains irreplaceable in critical decision-making processes.
The Societal Impact: Technology Shaping Society and Vice Versa
Dave provided a unique lens, combining his background in social work with extensive tech industry experience. He explored the interplay between society and technology, arguing that the relationship is bidirectional.
“Society impacts technology as much as technology impacts society,” he said. “…You have to understand that we are not, as humans, binary in our in terms of our presentation. A lot of what we do is very, very subtle, is nuanced. And a lot of times, the systems that we program or the things that we have built up until this point assume a type of linearity or a certain type of presentation matrix, and that does not actually play out in real life. The beauty of humanity is in is in our deficit sometimes – it’s in the things that we lack. We are lossy individuals, if you will. So, I think part of understanding and in that continuum is that there are differences and those differences can be exacerbated by a one-size-fits-all technology that gets applied to a dataset or gets applied to what we’ve always done or business as usual.”
Dave highlighted the risk of AI systems amplifying societal biases, pointing out that the data fed into AI often reflects existing partialities. He called for a more nuanced approach to AI development, one that acknowledges these biases and works actively to mitigate them.
The Road Ahead: Balancing Innovation with Accountability
Our discussion underscored a recurring theme: AI’s potential is immense, but so are its risks. As Florence aptly put it, “We are unleashing technologies without the equivalent of an FDA for public safety.” The need for ethical frameworks, rigorous testing, and continuous oversight is paramount.
Peter’s analogy to the aviation industry serves as a hopeful blueprint—an example of how industries can evolve safely and responsibly with the right measures in place. Meanwhile, Matty’s and Dave’s insights remind us that the human element—our judgment, creativity, and ethical considerations—remains central to AI’s future.
