Is there a way to browse the root of the element store and list/delete old directories that are not longer used and dont have any view.
I can create new views, but can not see what already there.

You will have to create a view at the root (of the element store or the tenant depending on whether this is a multi-tenant system or not). When you mount that view you should see any leftover folders. (subject to ACLs)
